Hook-and-loop diaper tabs and adhesive tapes each have strengths. The fastener on a diaper affects how secure it feels, how many times you can adjust it, and how easy it is for someone else to help you. There are two main types.
Adhesive tapes
- Lie flat and are less bulky.
- Grip very firmly, especially on plastic backing.
- Can lose stickiness, or tear a cloth-like backing, if repositioned often.
Hook-and-loop tabs
- Can be opened and closed many times without losing grip, which is ideal for checks and caregiver changes.
- Slightly bulkier and occasionally scratchy at the edges.
- Found on DryBritches Posy and ABU’s BunnyHopps, Little Kings and AlphaGatorZ.

Tips for either
Keep fasteners free of lotion or barrier cream, which weakens adhesion. If an adhesive tape fails, a strip of medical or packing tape is a quick fix in a pinch.
Quick checklist: Start with a product that matches your absorbency needs, measure your waist and hips before choosing a size, and try samples before buying in bulk. Change promptly, clean gently and use a light barrier cream to protect your skin. Keep a small kit with a spare, wipes and a disposal bag when you go out. If you notice new or worsening leaks, pain, or changes in your urine, talk to a doctor, since many causes of incontinence are treatable.
Smart shopping checklist: Confirm your size with a sample first, then compare the cost per diaper across packs, cases and subscriptions. Check whether the retailer ships in plain packaging and how the charge will appear on your statement. Look for HSA or FSA eligibility if you have an account, and read the return policy before ordering, since opened hygiene products generally can’t be returned. Signing up for brand newsletters is also an easy way to hear about sales first.
