Plastic pants and other covers are the last line of defense over a diaper. A cover worn over a diaper won’t add absorbency, but it catches small leaks, holds everything snug, and can make a diaper quieter or more discreet.
Types of cover
- Plastic pants: the classic pull-on cover. Gary’s pull-on plastic pants are a long-running example, sold in sizes from small adult to 5XL with heat-welded seams.
- PUL pants: polyurethane-laminated fabric that’s waterproof yet softer and quieter than plastic.
- Printed covers: brands like Land of Genie and LittleForBig make decorative covers for wear over disposables.

When a cover helps most
- Overnight, to catch leg or waist leaks.
- Over cloth diapers, which aren’t waterproof on their own.
- To quiet a crinkly plastic diaper under clothes.
Care
Wash plastic pants in warm (not hot) water and air-dry them away from heat; high heat makes vinyl brittle. PUL can usually go in the dryer on low.
Quick checklist: Start with a product that matches your absorbency needs, measure your waist and hips before choosing a size, and try samples before buying in bulk. Change promptly, clean gently and use a light barrier cream to protect your skin. Keep a small kit with a spare, wipes and a disposal bag when you go out. If you notice new or worsening leaks, pain, or changes in your urine, talk to a doctor, since many causes of incontinence are treatable.
Smart shopping checklist: Confirm your size with a sample first, then compare the cost per diaper across packs, cases and subscriptions. Check whether the retailer ships in plain packaging and how the charge will appear on your statement. Look for HSA or FSA eligibility if you have an account, and read the return policy before ordering, since opened hygiene products generally can’t be returned. Signing up for brand newsletters is also an easy way to hear about sales first.
