Plastic-backed diapers and cloth-like diapers are both waterproof, but they feel, sound and wear very differently. The outer layer of a disposable diaper, called the backsheet, is one of the biggest choices you’ll make. NorthShore describes the two options simply: a plastic (poly) film, or a soft cloth-like material. Both are waterproof. They just feel, sound and behave differently.
Plastic backing
- Very reliable leak barrier, and tapes can usually be refastened without tearing.
- Makes the familiar crinkle sound that some wearers love and others want to avoid.
- Traps more heat, which can be uncomfortable in summer.
Many specialty brands lean toward plastic. Tykables markets its “Toddler Tough Plastic,” BetterDry and Crinklz both advertise plastic backing, and DryBritches’ Posy is plastic-backed.

Cloth-like backing
- Quieter and more breathable, with a fabric feel against clothes and bedding.
- Generally better for skin in warm weather.
- Tapes can tear the outer layer if repositioned too often, so many brands add a reinforced landing zone.
Tykables’ “Cuddle Cloth” line and Kiddo’s Premium Night (Cloth Backed) are examples, and Kiddo sells Premium Night in both backings so you can compare directly.
Bottom line
Choose plastic for maximum security and refastening; choose cloth-like for comfort, breathability and quiet. If you can’t decide, buy a sample of each.
Quick checklist: Start with a product that matches your absorbency needs, measure your waist and hips before choosing a size, and try samples before buying in bulk. Change promptly, clean gently and use a light barrier cream to protect your skin. Keep a small kit with a spare, wipes and a disposal bag when you go out. If you notice new or worsening leaks, pain, or changes in your urine, talk to a doctor, since many causes of incontinence are treatable.
Smart shopping checklist: Confirm your size with a sample first, then compare the cost per diaper across packs, cases and subscriptions. Check whether the retailer ships in plain packaging and how the charge will appear on your statement. Look for HSA or FSA eligibility if you have an account, and read the return policy before ordering, since opened hygiene products generally can’t be returned. Signing up for brand newsletters is also an easy way to hear about sales first.
